“Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee”

(Psalm 119:11)

As we ponder this verse, let us ask 3 questions:-

1. WHAT HAVE I HID? – “THY WORD.”

This is not man’s word, but the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. It is a precious treasure worth hiding. Let no thief steal it, no moth corrupt it, no rust corrode it. We cannot set too high a value on the Word of God. Let me hide it out of reach of everyone and everything that could deprive me of it.

2. WHERE HAVE I HID IT? – “IN MY HEART.”

It is to be hidden not in my head or in my intellect. It is to be hidden in my heart; the seat of my affections, the centre of my moral being, the source of all that will influence my entire life. This is the right place to hide the Word, not under the bed of sloth, nor under the bushel of materialism, not in the earth lest men oppose us. Let my heart be the treasure chest of the Divine Word.

3. WHY HAVE I HID IT? – “THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN AGAINST THEE.” This is not that I might have a rich supply of new ideas that no one else has ever thought of. This is not to have special academic knowledge that I can boast about and show off. Nor is it to have a store of argument to confound opposers. The Psalmist did not care about these things. He had a Holy horror of sin. David lamented; “Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned” (Psa. 51:4). The most effectual safeguard against sin is the indwelling Spirit of God and the inward treasures of the Word of God. May we hide it in our heart.
